Willkommen zum zweiten Newsletter 2009.
Inhalt sind MFOsche Beiträge zum sound:frame, der gemeinsame Auftritt mit Hecq in Tallinn beim Temps D’Image (samt Videoclip) und einige YouTube Videos zur Clubtransmediale.
sound:frame
Bereits am letzten Wochenende startete das sound:frame Festival in Wien. Es widmet sich der Visualisierung von Musik – in Vorträgen, Workshops und Clubveranstaltungen. Das diesjährige Motto lautet “Evolution remixed”. Die Evolution der Audio-Vision seit den Anfängen des experimentellen Films steht auf dem Programm. Zur Website des sound:frame.
Da ist es nur konsequent, dass in diesem Jahr auch eine Ausstellung stattfindet, in der die Geschichte und gegenwärtigen Tendenzen dieser Kunstform vorstellt werden. MFO wurden eingeladen, an dieser Ausstellung teilzunehmen. Und zum Vjing am 12.04. ins brut Theater.
Während der Arbeit hörten MFO das Album “ReComposed” zu ersten mal – und wurden inspiriert.
“ReComposed” erschien Ende 2008 auf Deutsche Grammophon, dem Traditionslabel für Klassik. Carl Craig und Moritz von Oswald, zwei Legenden der elektronischen Musik, wurden eingeladen, klassische Stücke neu zu interpretieren. Ihre Wahl fiel auf Mussorgskis “Bilder einer Ausstellung” und Ravels “Bolero”. Das Ergebnis wurde in der Musikpresse einhellig gelobt und als großer Wurf bezeichnet.
Eine Visualisierung des Albums war da ein naheliegender Wunsch. MFO hatten Glück – Kontakt konnte hergestellt werden und es entstand ein Videoclip, der demnächst im Nachtprogramm des Bayerischen Rundfunk laufen wird!
Dieser Videoclip wurde für das sound:frame zu einer Videoinstallation in Sichtbereich-sprengendem Breitbild aufgearbeitet. Die Ausstellung ist im Künstlerhaus k/haus am Karlsplatz in Wien noch bis zum 26.04 zu sehen.
Eine Version des Clips für normale Bildschirme wird zeitgleich zu dessen Start im Nachtprogramm des Bayrischen Rundfunk online gestellt, voraussichtlich Anfang Juni.
Hecq & MFO in Tallinn
Hecq und MFO wurden von den Machern des Plektrum Festival nach Tallinn eingeladen. Im Rahmen von Temps D’Image, einem wandernden Theaterfestival, wurden sie gebeten, ein A/V Live Set im Von Krahl Theater zu spielen.
Hecq spielte einen Mix aus Titeln von seinem neuen, großartigen Album und einigen älteren Stücken. Eine Reise von ambienten Flächen zu feister IDM, mitreißend und Assoziationen weckend. Das neue Album, “Steeltongued”, erscheint Ende April. Es umfasst auch eine CD mit Remixen bekannten Akteure wie Xabec, Si Begg, Raoul Sinier, Mothboy, Michael Fakesch und anderen – absolut hörenswert!
MFOs beschäftigte sich dazu mit dem Thema Retrofuturismus, inspiriert von den “Urania Universum” Bänden. “Urania Universum” war eine populärwissenschaftliche Buchreihe, die von 1950 bis 90 jährlich in Ostdeutschland erschien. Deren liebevoll arrangierten Abbildungen und Illustrationen verbinden sich in MFOs Visuals mit organischen Strukturen und mystischen Suggestionen.
Präsentiert wurden die Visuals auf drei Leinwänden – in massivem Breitbild.

MFO @ CTM
Ende Januar spielten MFO auf der Clubtransmediale, wie bereits im letzten Newsletter angekündigt. Es war ein großartiges Festival! Wie auch in den Jahren davor, voll gestopft mit Highlights. Zu viele um sie alle zu nennen. Daher hier nur der Verweis auf diverse Berichte zur CTM09.
MFO begleiteten einige Helden der Space-Disko Szene, wie Elitechnique, Black Devial Disco Club und The Emperor Machine. Hierfür begannen die Beschäftigung mit dem Thema Retrofuturismus. Der Space Sound wurde damit sehr gut getroffen. MFO bekamen sehr viel positives Feedback an diesem Abend!

Welcome to the second newsletter in 2009.

sound:frame
Vienna’s sound:frame festival already started last weekend. It discusses the visualisation of music – in lectures, workshops and club events. This year’s motto is “Evolution Remixed”. The evolution of audio-vision since the very beginning of experimental film is on focus. Read more on the sound:frame website.
It’s only consequent that this year’s festival edition also includes an exhibition. The exhibition deals with the history and contemporary tendencies of this art form.
MFO was invited to participate in this exhibition. And to do some vjing on the 12. april at brut theatre.
During work MFO listened to the album “ReComposed” for the first time – and got inspired.
“ReComposed” was released at the end of 2008 on Deutsche Grammophon, the label for classical music per se. Carl Craig and Moritz von Oswald, two legends of electronical music, have been invited to newly interpret classical pieces. They’ve chosen Maurice Ravel’s orchestra piece “Boléro” and Mussorgski’s “Pictures of an exhibition”. The result was unanimous lauded by the music press and called a masterpiece.
Hence the visualisation of this album was a obvious wish. MFO had good luck – contact could be made and in the result a video clip was created, that will soon be screened in the night program of Bayerischer Rundfunk, a german tv station!
The video clip was reworked for sound:frame and can be seen as a field-of-vision blowing widescreen video installation. The exhibition can be visited in the Künstlerhaus k/haus at Karlsplatz in Vienna until the 26th of april.
A version of the clip for normal screens will go online simultaneously with its start in the night program of Bayerischer Rundfunk (german tv). Probably in the beginning of june.
Hecq & MFO in Tallinn
MFO and Hecq were invited to Tallinn by the makers of the Plektrum festival. In the scope of Festival Temps D’Image, a touring theatre event, they’ve played an AV live set at Von Krahl theatre.
Musicwise Hecq combined some of his older tracks with titles of his brand new album. A journey from ambient to finest IDM, intoxicating and invoking associations. This awesome, new album is named “Steeltongued” and will be release at the end of april. It also contains a CD with remixes by well known artists, such as Xabec, Si Begg, Raoul Sinier, Mothboy, Michael Fakesch …
MFO attended to the topic of retrofuturism. Inspired by "Urania Universum", a series of popular science books annually published in Eastern Germany from the 50ies to the 90ies. Its affectionately arranged pictures and illustrations fuse in MFOs visuals with organic structures and mystic suggestions.
The visuals were presented on 3 screens – massive widescreen.

MFO @ CTM
As announced in the last newsletter, MFO played at Clubtransmediale at the end of january. Again it was a tremendous festival, fully packed of highlights. Too many of those to be named here. So, please follow this link to some of the many reports about CTM 09.
At Clubtransmediale MFO visually supported some heros of the Italo Disco / Space Disco scene. Like Elitechnique, Black Devial Disco Club and The Emperor Machine. Therefor the work on the topic of retrofuturismus was started. And it met the space sound very well! MFO received a lot of positive feedback in that night.
